2017 Young Artist Competition

Application Deadline: December 19, 2016

COLLEGIATE DIVISION

  • Eligibility: Students attending a college or university under the age of 25 (by 12/19/2016)
  • Categories: VOICE or INSTRUMENTAL (Brass, Percussion, Piano, Strings, or Woodwinds)
  • Prize: All finalists receive a $50 cash award (upon completion of the finals recital)
  • Division Winner: $1,000 cash award, plus opportunity to be invited as featured guest soloist with the Paducah Symphony Orchestra

SECONDARY SCHOOL DIVISION

  • Eligibility: Students in grades 9-12
  • Categories: INSTRUMENTAL (Brass, Percussion, Piano, Strings, or Woodwinds)
  • Prize: All finalists receive a $50 cash award (upon completion of the finals recital)
  • Division Winner: $500 cash award, plus opportunity to be invited as featured guest soloist with the Paducah Symphony Orchestra, plus music scholarship to Murray State University (if eligible)

Application Materials:

  • Online application form
  • MP3 recording of required repertoire
  • Non-refundable application fee of $50

Repertoire: Only one movement of a concerto, or equivalent of approximately 15 minutes, for soloists will be performed. The composition must be a solo with standard symphony orchestra accompaniment that is readily available through commercial sources.  The music selection submitted for the initial application shall be the selection performed in the final round concert, if the applicant is chosen as a finalist in his/her division. Music must be performed from memory.

Timeline: Applicants will be notified no later than January 19, 2017 if they have been advanced to the Finals Recital at Murray State University, February 19, 2017.

Finals Recital: Finalists from each division will be selected to perform live in front of an audience at Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky, on February 19, 2017. Only LIVE performances for the final round will be considered. Pianos will be available for use by contestants in the Final Round. All applicants must perform with accompaniment. Applicant is allowed to use their own accompanist, however Murray State University will provide an accompanist if requested. All contestants must perform music selection from memory.

Please Note: Contestants who advance to the final competition will be responsible for their own travel and hotel expenses.

Future Eligibility: All applicants, if otherwise eligible, may compete in the same or higher division the following year, according to the entrant’s level in school. However, a “Performance Award” cannot be awarded to the same student for two successive years in the same division.
